Bleary Drops New Soul on “Bad Days”

Bleary

Bleary is an aspiring singer, songwriter and multi-genre producer from Portland, Oregon. The versatile artist launched a new phase of his musical career in 2020. After surviving a life-threatening experience he went through what he calls a “hard reset” and dedicated his newfound energy and motivation to his musical career. Since then he has released a steady stream of new material leading up to a brand new EP.

His first songs introduced the new record in three phases. “Sever, Pt. 1,” “Peace (Sever, Pt. 2)” and “Weeknight (Sever, Pt.3)” were Bleary’s three consecutive singles, each riffing on the theme of a breakup from a different stylistic angle. The songs also represent the first three tracks on his new EP “Bad Days,” released worldwide to all major streaming services on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2021.

The record opens with the downtempo R&B soul and lo-fi Hip-hop of Part 1. The track sets the stage for a concept album of sorts. The song’s on “Bad Days” chronicle the experience of a painful romantic split. Part 2 comes at the subject from a Dark Emo Indie Pop angle, with a slowly strummed dramatic, minor-key guitar chord progression and a classic Emo vocal track. Part 3 introduces a soul vibe with a bluesy 6/8 beat.

Throughout the 9 song collection Bleary continues his exploration of mellow grooves in multiple genres. Musically and vocally he transitions smoothly through rap bars and soulful R&B verses. “Let Me Go” and “Candy” get philosophical over deep Ambient Electronic vibe. “Long Gone” pairs a downbeat old-school Hip-hop beat with Trap hi-hats and Jazz-hop instrumentation. “One Day” is a real high point with a cool mix of soul, Pop and Hip-hop. The record ends with two different shades of R&B with the smooth synths and melancholy mood of “I Tried” and the chill piano lament of “Don’t See You (Outtro)”.
