Dress Code is the professional name of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist producer Derek Holley. The project debuted as a duo back in 2004 with the “Sonic Boom EP.” That musical partnership dissolved soon afterward, but Derek kept the band alive as a solo act. Since then the prolific artist from Dayton, Ohio has delivered seven EPs, three full length albums and a handful of singles.
The Dress Code sound is an analog/electronic hybrid with deep roots in classic 80’s Electro Pop. Over the years, Holley has built a dedicated fanbase. His songs have garnered millions of spins across multiple streaming platforms. Dress Code’s music has appeared in Indie films and earned some high-profile placements on MTV and VH1.
“Connection” is the latest EP from Dress Code, released worldwide to all major streaming services on July 9, 2021. Since then, the record has connected with fans around the world. The five song collection digs deep into the retro Synth Pop aesthetic. From the opening rhythmic assault of the title track to experimental electro-Funk groove of the closer “Systematic,” the EP combines the electronic Pop sensibilities of the 1980’s with Electronic Music production techniques of today.
Within that retro/modern mix, Derek explores multiple musical styles. He digs into some Disco vibes on tracks like “Here we Go” and “Double Life.” Throughout the record he slides easily between Michael Jackson inspired Pop to classic INXS-style Alternative. Each New Wave groove on the EP is peppered with a funky bass line and some nice lead guitar shredding.
