Spacebudda is the professional name of bassist, composer and producer Aalics (Alex) Bronson. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, years ago he moved to NYC to pursue a life as a musician. There he launched a career as a session player, tour manager and bass/guitar tech that has included work with legendary New York artists like Living Color, 24/7 Spyz and Ms. Lauryn Hill.
After decades of similar storied collaborations, Bronson has taken the creative leap into a solo career. “Time. Sounds from tha KubEhole Vol. 1” is the debut EP from Spacebudda, released worldwide to all major streaming services on September 22, 2021. On the six song collection he and some very talented friends lay down a cool, raw and organic Funk.
The record opens on the downtempo soul crawl “Mother. Jungle. Woman.” Vocalist Asa Lovechild delivers a bluesy and poetic meditation on motherhood and social justice as the band rolls a laid-back bass groove. The tune rides out on some Hendrix-worthy Acid Rock guitar.
“Time…” continues that low, cool funk through its many moods. Vocalist Rozz Nash joins the band for the sexy breakup track “Kitty” as it builds from a minimalist jam to an ethereal ambient mood. That trippy vibe continues as Asa Lovechild returns for the psychedelic “Water” and the sultry “Hard Days / Good Nights.”
“Them Eyes” finds Spacebudda at center stage. He drops a funky and melodic Bootsy-style bass solo over a hypnotic electronic backing track. The record ends on “Time.” Lovechild duets with Bronson’s bass for a bit of Zen introspection. It’s a beautiful exhale to close out a soulful slice of NYC life.
Transformation and healing lead to the creation of this work. I hope to continue exploring more sounds and vibes.
