Falsely Accused are a Rock & Roll power trio from the cities of Boston and Littleton, Massachusetts. Although the group claims New England as its place of geographical origin, their sound has roots that spread from the Deep South to the West Coast. The band consists of Mike Azzolino (drums), Matt Tavano (bass/vocals) and Mark Young (guitar), three veterans of the Boston music scene who came together to share their love of guitar and groove driven Rock.
“Compression” is the debut album from Falsely Accused, released worldwide to all major streaming services on Halloween, October 31, 2021. The record is a 10-song journey through the history of Fuzz-powered riff-Rock. The record opens on “Running with the Devil,” a bluesy tune with some louder than bombs power and Southern Metal groove that feels like it rose up from a bayou.
That swampy vibe is a constant. Throughout the album the trio navigates its way through numerous sub genres of Classic Rock, Indie and Metal. However, at their heart they are a Blues band. For instance, tracks like “Hellbound” and “The Messenger” feature Mötley Crüe-style grooves and plenty of Danzig vocal punch. But as they progress, Falsely Accused kicks into some jams that neither of those 80’s bands has ever attempted.
The band takes on a more 90’s Alternative feel on songs like “Stay Gold” and “Firewater.” “Cry Havoc” is a real high point with a mix of ZZ Top-style Texas Blues and some fabulously deep and grungy slide, a-la fellow Bostonian Mark Sandman. He pioneered the marriage of Blues and Alternative Rock in his bands Treat Her Right and the legendary Morphine. In many ways Falsely Accused comes from a similar creative space as the late-great bass player.
“Westbound” continues the stylistic exploration with a rhythm that lands somewhere between a Bo-Diddley beat and Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life.” The band closes out the set with three riff-rockers full of Bluesy soul, Metal power and Acid Rock psychedelia; “Phoenix,” “Rotate” and “Drones.” The latter rides on a cool Golden Earing-style Classic Rock feel.
