Canary Complex is the professional name of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist producer Kasey Jarrell. The North Carolina-based musician debuted his solo project in 2021 with the album When I Say Rain… That record introduced a multi-talented artist with a meticulously crafted chamber-pop sound.
Since his debut, the prolific producer has released three singles and two full length albums. When not in the studio, Kasey plays guitar in the popular dreamy synth-pop Raleigh band Flood District. On March 31 he dropped the artful impressionist-inspired sophomore Canary Complex release.
“Bel Esprit” is the sixth song and current single from the brand new Canary Complex album, The Tragic Dance of Dying Leaves. An acoustic guitar introduces the tune as ambient synths and ethereal electric guitars expand across the horizon. Soon the beat drops on a dreamy mid-tempo groove. On the mic, Kasey sings of recreating his lover’s likeness on a mannequin. With its mix of timeless pop melodies and airy alternative vibes, the song brings to mind the and soul-infused work of dream-pop pioneers live The Style Council and Roxy Music.
