Rogues Of Chaos – A Rockin’ West Coast Super Group Makes Their Debut

rogues of chaos

Rogues of Chaos is a new West Coast supergroup founded by veteran rocker Julian Jerry Flack, guitarist and songwriter of the seminal San Diego punk group Cardiac Kidz. He and the band toured the world during their late 70s and early 80s run.

In 2021 Jerry reconnected with old friend keyboardist Cristina Smith. Jerry was soon writing new songs and they liked what they heard so they called up some friends and Rogues of Chaos was born. They included former bandmate Caylyn Gamboa (vocals), Marty Erickson (harmonica and percussion), Lisa Tansey (bass), and David Rinck (rhythm guitar). Doug Newberry joined later after the death of original drummer Kevin La Pierre.

“Crazy For You” is the debut single from Rogues of Chaos, released worldwide via all major streaming services on May 4, 2024. A machine-gun drum-roll opens the track as the beat lands on an uptempo power pop groove. Caylyn Gamboa delivers a high-octane love song with an infectiously catchy radio-ready hook as Jerry and the band rock out with power-chord abandon. “Crazy For You” was produced by Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big), who also plays drums on the track.

What inspired you to create this project?

Who knew that when Jerry Flack and Cristina Smith met in first grade at Jefferson Elementary School in San Diego it would inspire the creation of the Rogues of Chaos? The two met up again later in high school and rekindled their friendship (and later admitted they had each had a crush on the other, though never mentioned it at the time). After high school, Flack went on to be a founding member of the pioneering rockers of United States west coast 70s punk, the Cardiac Kidz, and Smith went into rock and roll radio at the iconic San Diego KGB radio station and on the production team of the weekly nationally syndicated Brainstorm! with Gabriel Wisdom show.

They reconnected in 2021 when Flack was working on a Cardiac Kidz reunion show with Kidz co-founder Jim Ryan. After that gig, Flack invited Smith, a classically-trained keyboardist, to brainstorm and jam to put together a new band featuring Flack’s original material. From there, Flack invited vocalist Caylyn Gamboa to join. Her rock style blends seamlessly with Flack’s fast paced, high-energy music, they had worked together in the short-lived band, Me and the Boyz. Gamboa’s distinctive voice and emotional range bring Flack’s wide range of lyrics to life.

Next Flack invited longtime friend Marty Erickson to join in on harmonica and percussion. Smith invited longtime friend Lisa Tansey to join on bass, then Flack brought former Kidz sometimes rhythm guitarist David Rinck on board. Doug Newberry is a recent addition after the death of drummer Kevin La Pierre.

Flack and Smith brought on drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big) to drum on Rogues of Chaos recordings and serve as producer.

What are your plans for the future (musically)?

We have released our first single, Crazy for You, from our upcoming album, I Fear the Night, scheduled to be released in late 2024. We are on tour in the western U.S. in August.

Is there anything else you would like to say?
