Some Perspective From the Past

Some Perspective From the Past 1

I found this on my old blog, originally published on February 20, 2006

The sun’s diameter is 1,390,000 km. and its mass is 1.989*10^30 kg.

There are 100,000,000,000 stars like it in our galaxy.

There are at least 100,000,000,000 galaxies in the observable universe.

The universe is somewhere between 10,000,000,000 and 20,000,000,000 years old.

You (the average American) are under 6 feet tall, and weigh less than 200 lbs.

You are barely visible from the top of a tall tree

You will live to be approximately 77 years old.

…that is just 77 revolutions of the Earth around the Sun.

Our planet will make the trip 9,000,000,000 times before it’s done.

You won’t be around to see it

Light travels at 186,000 miles per second

You walk at approximately 3 miles per hour

It takes you 30 minutes to drive to work

It takes light 1.3 seconds to get here from the Moon

The gravitational field of a Black Hole is so strong that the escape velocity near it exceeds the speed of light

You can’t even bench press your own weight
