Two-Line Reviews – Dark Pop to a Smooth Chillout

I curate two Spotify playlists. When I update them I write short two-line reviews here. Sometimes the reviews are three lines. The rules are not strict.

With lines like “living without your soul it ain’t so bad, I never really had one anyway” ‘Deal With the Devil’ is clever, and darkly funny. And the production is wildly creative. But those facts are secondary to GG’s excellent vocals. I love this.

I’m sitting on the couch with a laptop on my lap listening to this song. I really should be on the dance floor. On ‘Bombay Boogie’ the Canadian EDM duo LPK gives us a fun and funky track with an international vibe that fits its title nicely.

Everytime something new happened in this song, I got deeper into it. First the kick drum sounded cool, then the guitar got my attention. When Katie started singing, I was hooked. This is a beautiful alt-folk, Americana tune.

Artist: JULA
Track: Leave
Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands

JULA

The long sustained notes of JULA’s beautiful breathy voice and this song’s stark instrumentation had a real Portishead vibe. And that is a wonderful thing.

As I am wont to do, as of late, I am closing out this playlist update with a smooth chillout number. In this case, the tune is very aptly titled “Smooth Chillout.” It’s a nice mellow synth groove with some classy guitar. Go ahead, poor yourself a mohito, and chill.
