There is nothing like an early winter walk through Midtown Manhattan. It is the best way to get the yuletide season started. Yesterday I was lucky enough to enjoy one such Holiday stroll. When I returned home, I strapped on my headphones and cued up “Winter Wish” by Gina Naomi Baez.
The timing was perfect. As the first few chords played and the beat introduced itself, Gina’s words painted a scene that matched my reality beautifully. For example, the track opens with the words, “train home, windows looking like a snow globe.” She may as well have been narrating my day.
Gina Naomi Baez
Gina Naomi Baez is a singer/songwriter and YouTuber from New York. Earlier this year she put her talents to work on “Lizzo’s Truth Hurts x Hocus Pocus.” The Halloween themed parody music video went viral. As a result, it garnered over 15 million views.
In 2017 she enjoyed similar success with the melancholy holiday single, “Unwrap Your Heart.” This Christmas she is doing it again with “Winter Wish.” The song marries a modern production with classic Christmas tradition.
Modern Sound, Traditional Theme
Musically, the song features a Trap beat and an understated and beautiful backing track. A low synth bass anchors a subtle mix of keys, guitar, and vocals. Like a fresh bed of snow, the instrumental track sets a perfect scene for Gina’s beautiful vocals. The singer has an immediately likable and easy style. Her skilled voice transitions smoothly across a versatile range. Also, I love her use of backing harmonies throughout the tune.
A Christmas Twist
The video for “Winter Wish” is set amidst the holiday garb of a Christmas party in hues of pink and purple. It is very festive and cute, especially when the “winter wish” of the song’s title turns out to be an adorable puppy (Tinkerbelle the dog) wrapped in a bow.
