Jujuboy Star is the professional name of Osaretin Rock Akhibi. He is a twenty-four year old singer/songwriter and producer from Nigeria. With a sound he calls “Juju Vibe,” his brand of Afro R&B/Soul music is already getting a lot of attention.
In recent collaborations he worked with a number of other artists such as Adekunle Gold, Jidenna, Simi and Shay Seyi. Since then, Juju released a series of his own singles. His growing popularity is apparent. For example, his song “Gimme Love” has over 330K plays on Spotify.
“Low” is his new single. The song is an excellent example of the multi-layered and multi-cultural Jujuboy Star sound. The song blends elements of R&B, Hip-hop and even Jazz into a relaxed but funky groove. It is a soulfully sung slow jam with enough beat to keep the floor moving.
Jujuboy and SMOJ serenade over a slow and low beat. A mellow electric piano sets the mood, chills the wine and lights the candles on the table. I like the flashes of saxophone throughout the song. And I really like the approach to the production as a whole. An old school R&B feel is set to very modern World beat. It works really well.
