Marquette King is a man of many talents. In addition to his flourishing career in music, the Phoenix, AZ native is known throughout the sports world as an NFL punter. After an award winning college career with Georgia’s Fort Valley State University, he went on to play for both the Oakland Raiders and later the Denver Broncos. However, his success as an athlete has never diverted his love of music.
Currently on hiatus from football due to an injury, Marquette has been able to focus his full attention on creative endeavours. And people are paying attention. The self-proclaimed “pop-hop” (mixture of pop and hip-hop) artist has dropped a series of successful releases in the past year. His single “This Side” has already drawn over 300,000 spins on Spotify and it shows no signs of slipping.
The track grooves on a funky bass line that is one part EDM and one part reggae. It’s a great sound. King’s melodic rap style flows smoothly with a syncopated rhythm over a minimalist beat. Guest rapper Annabelle plays a perfect counterpoint to his cool laid back technique. Lyrically the track carries a positive message. On “This Side,” Marquette is keeping it real. You can stick around if you bring good vibes. But if not, “keep your hatin’ ass on that over there, on that side.”
2020 is just getting started and Marquette King has more music on the way. You can check out “This Side” on the Deep Indie Beat playlist. Follow the links below to keep up to date on all of his current and future projects.
