Midnightview is an interesting character. The native of Jamaica has been making music for nearly a decade. He specializes in chill, R&B flavored Hip-Hop. As a rapper his vocal style leans slightly toward the old-school. His technique bears more than a passing resemblance to artists like Jay-Z and J Cole.
With over 44,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, he has his devotees. And it’s not just his music that connects. Midnightview is also a bodybuilding Instagram model with over 15,000 followers. All of that is pretty cool. But you’ll find that it is really just the tip of the iceberg when you dig a little deeper. He’s funny, and more than a little off-the-wall.
For instance, his artist bio on Spotify reads like standard fare… for the first four words. Then he drops to the first person and commences a bizarre stream-of-consciousness self description. It’s all a bit goofy, and a lot of fun. Rather than tell his history as an artist, Midnightview details the things he is “obsessed” with. Spoiler alert; they include pickle jars, sex, UFO’s, sex, glade plugins, and sex.
That is where Midnightview’s new single comes in. Obviously with a title like, “I Was One Orgasm Away From Falling In Love With You All And Then I Woke Up,” this is not a family friendly sing-along. The track is a four minute recitation of the very long list of famous women with whom he would like sexual congress. No filter is applied in his detailing of the acts he would like to perform with everyone from Kendall Jenner to Rita Ora. The lyrics are explicit with a capital X.
Musically the track is a slow and sexy funk. Over an old-school hip-hop beat Midnightview mixes some classic 70’s R&B samples. The result is a very chill slow jam groove. He has a great production style, setting a nice balance between soulful backing vocals and bluesy instrumentation.
