We’ve been following the progress of The Groove Project from the beginning. Last year the Jazz super-group, fronted by Grammy Award nominated producers Arun Shenoy and Lonnie Park, as well as acclaimed producer Matthew Shell, set out to release a single every month in the build up to a complete album.
The time has come! “Flights of Fantasy” drops on 6/26. The record is a Smooth Jazz / Contemporary Jazz concept album about man’s fascination with flight. The idea is in part, a posthumous tribute to Roshni Mohapatra (7 Jan 1980 – 13 Dec 2018). She envisioned one of Shenoy’s previous projects as a multi-sensory experience of music, art, animation and physical packaging. She has previously cited Davie Bowie and Pink Floyd as some of her early influences for art direction of musical projects.
True to form, in advance of next month’s album release the team has released a new single for May. The track “Bird on a Wire (song for Mo),” is a mellow smooth jazz ballad. The track features The Groove Project’s usual suspects, as well as some new names. Joining Shenoy, Park, and Shell are Marcus Mitchell on sax, Samituru on guitar, Hector Ruano on bass, Glenn Welman on drums, and David Joubert.
“Bird on a Wire is a beautiful tune featuring signature sounds we have come to know well, including smooth melodic lead saxophone and subtle vocal refrains. I particularly like the funky electric piano solo at 1:25 and the rocking fusion electric guitar lead at 3:25. The track is paired with a video of martial arts experts taking flight without the aid of wings.
