R U D I is a singer and songwriter from Oslo, Norway. Although he only recently made his debut, with three singles released so far in 2020, his career in music is something he has been preparing for his whole life. Despite what he describes as, “a lifetime spent obsessing over pop music,” he has just now decided to share his gifts with the world.
“Heartstrings” is R U D I’s third and most recent single, released earlier this month. The song is an emotional lament from a scorned lover. It’s a break-up song told from the perspective of the jilted party. The singer calls his ex to task for infidelities and indifference. R U D I’s vocals are real and emotionally raw. The performance gradually builds in intensity as the song progresses.
Musically the track is primarily a piano ballad. However, subtle musical accompaniment provides added depth and warmth to the mix. A soft synth bed gives the song an ambient air to breathe. Eventually a mellow strummed acoustic guitar joins the ensemble. From trap hi-hats to the big reverb snare drum, the production is a cool mix of modern production techniques and 1980’s Pop sensibilities.
In his bio R U D I lists legends like Adele and Christina Aguilera some of his musical heroes. You can hear their influence, especially in the composition of “Heartsrings.” The song’s cinematic chorus in particular has such a classic sounding Pop melody, it is immediately relatable and singable. He may be new, but he knows how to put together a simple and memorable melody. That’s how hit songs are written.
