DregottheBlues is a New York City based rapper and songwriter. Originally from Bloomfield, CT the emerging Hip-hop artist spent the last few years writing music for a number of other Pop, R&B and Hip-Hop acts. His new single “Cruisin” represents his return to his own music since the 2016 EP “Bluejack.”
Exactly as the title implies, “Cruisin” is a chill Hip-hop groove tailor made for riding slow through the neighborhood. The track has a cool R&B vibe with Jazz-hop style samples of a bluesy piano and bass. An old-school Hip-hop breakbeat rhythm keeps the wheels slowly rolling forward. It is a very NYC sound. One can almost picture the streets of Brooklyn passing by through the open window of a sedan full of friends, cruisin’.
Lyrically, Dre takes a look out that window with realist optimism. His vocal delivery is a laid back and melodic hip-hop style with occasional R&B inflections. The song is not overtly positive or negative. However, it views the world as it is with an eye toward how it could be.
The overall vibe is uplifting as the rapper highlights the resiliency of rising above the obstacles in our way. As he says, “adversity is a state of mind, it took years of depression to write your favorite lines.” Fellow NYC rapper, Atelo joins him for a cool melodic break in the bridge.
