Dittomaster’s New Wave Electro-Jazz Pop – Skies on Fire

Dittomaster is a Portland, Oregon-based producer and performer, also known as Michael Wilson. And he is a talented dude. Wilson performs every note, of every instrument on his records. The significance of that fact becomes clear upon hearing the complexity of his music.

“Skies on Fire” is Dittomaster’s latest single and it is a wonderful introduction into his unique musical world. The song opens with a Lo-Fi recording of dissonant guitar and keys. However, the track quickly blows that sound up into a fabulously 80’s New Wave jam.

The track is a sort of Synthwave, Electro-Jazz Pop. I just made that up, but I think it fits. Wilson has a sophisticated composition and arrangement style that brings to mind electronic pioneers like Howard Jones or Trevor Horn. However, he is also able to maintain a quirky and smirky Pop vibe like that of Thomas Dolby or Gary Numan. And he knows how to write a hook.

There is a lot of implied drama in the song, which is fun. It suggests the track may be part of a larger whole. For instance, there is a refrain with a particularly theatrical arrangement and performance. I felt as though I had just walked into the middle of a really cool Sci-fi Rock Opera. I didn’t know what was happening, but I wanted to hear more.
