Warganization is the professional name of producer and multi-instrumentalist Jack Morrison. The Lafayette, Louisiana-based musician has been creating his unique brand of experimental Electronic and Alternative music for the better part of a decade. In that time he has produced two albums and over a dozen EPs and singles. Each takes a different path down a road of Trip-Hop infused dark Electro-Alt/Pop.
“Like a Nightmare” is Warganization’s latest bit of funked-up psychedelia. The track is built on a wild mix of overdriven Radiohead-esque industrial breakbeats and a mellow bass groove. The organic/robotic hybrid rhythm sets the scene for the singer’s meditative vocals. A jazzy electric piano serves as accompaniment and creates a cool anachronistic lounge feel
The track exists in a trippy hypnagogic space of its own. Morrison’s voice floats between a mellow Perry Farrell (Janes Addiction) and an amped-up Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace) as he riffs on the central lyrical theme, “It’s like a nightmare that you can’t wake up from.”
The song’s accompanying video (above) reinforces the theme with hallucinogenic scenes of Morrison performing the song on each instrument, set in eerie lighting and garb. Much like the audio, the short film combines modern and retro technologies with creepy scenes of suggested homicidal violence. Morrison’s nightmare ends when the musician is ended by a faceless knife-wielding companion.
