Pillowface Floats Hypnotic Clouds in His Coffee

Pillowface is the professional name of singer, songwriter and producer Josh Weider. The talented artist debuted his unique new project earlier this year. To date, as Pillowface he has released four singles of laid back and soulful music. His sound floats in an atmospheric space somewhere between Pop, R&B and Hip-hop.

“Coffee” is the latest single from Pillowface and his frequent collaborator, Clark Doolittle. The track is built on a unique groove that combines elements of Hip-hop, R&B and downtempo ambient electronic music. Opening on a soft bed of analog synths and peppered by found sound samples, the song immediately sets a dreamy and chill tone. Soon a slow and low Trap beat enters the mix. The mellow mood is set with a sound that is equal parts electronic and organic.

The two singers trade verses throughout the song. The attitude shifts back and forth between the Hip-hop posturing of Pillowface and Clark’s starkly contrasting emotional contemplations. Through a series of dream-like, stream of consciousness stanzas, the two weave together stories of love, drugs and money. Their autotune vocals create a surreal scene against the hypnotic backing track.
