It has been a busy year for Athens, GA band, By Small Ruin. Regular readers of The Static Dive are well acquainted with the Alternative group fronted by singer/songwriter Bryan Mullis. We have been closely following his remarkable output of radio-ready Alt-Pop in 2020. And we are not alone. Each of his eight singles released this year counts its streaming number sin the tens of thousands.
By Small Ruin has been at it for the better part of a decade. Even before that Mullis was gigging around the world, living through the experiences that would ultimately become fodder for the BSR songbook. His songs tell a personal narrative of life, love and lessons learned.
“Like Heaven” is a new chapter in that story. The track is an upbeat and celebratory love song. By Small Ruin’s signature mix of cool and creative Alt-Rock guitar and bass interplay, solid backbeat rhythm and smooth Pop vocals with a hint of Southern twang is on full display. Lyrically the song is a touching and joyous exclamation of appreciation for an important person in the singer’s life.
I wrote this song to express how I felt when I finally found that special someone who makes me a better person just by knowing her. She encourages me to be my best self even when I don’t believe I have it in me – never preachy, just living by example.
