Cody Lee has been around the Rock & Roll block. The New York City native spent his early years gigging from the UK to Vermont, Boston to NYC. He was a regular on the CBGB stage back in the heyday of the historic Manhattan club. He’s been signed to major and minor labels. He even started his own.
Now living in Chicago, Lee spent the last twenty years gigging around the Midwest with a number of outfits, most notably with the popular Delta Kings. Then came 2020, and the world shut down. Like so many others in the music world, Cody Lee did the only thing that made sense. He wrote some songs and made an album.
“Woodpecker Crisis” is the result. The album features nine songs of stories, observations and guitars. “New Normal” is the opening track on the record, and its first single. The song takes a matter of fact look at the absurdity of our modern world. With the wit and wisdom of a guy who has seen the good and the bad, we takes stock of the weird day-to-day we are all stuck in.
It ain’t what it was. It is what it is. Time to move on. Get on the program kid.

Musically the track rolls along on an organic percussive groove. Economical horns and a guitar as mellow and soulful as Cody’s vocal all ride the rhythm together. The song feels like a bluesy David Byrne song. Imagine Keb’ Mo’ and Talking Heads collaborating in some über cool parallel universe, as they sing about this significantly less cool reality. That’s the vibe.
