Doddi and Aldís Play The Game Of Love

Doddi is an old friend of The Static Dive. The Icelandic DJ and songwriter has appeared on these pages a number of times. He is an interesting character, well known in his home country as a musician and as the Program Director of Iceland’s premier popular music radio station.

Over the past two years, the prolific producer has released numerous singles, videos and albums, both as Doddi and as his alter-ego Love Guru. Each persona represents a different side of the artist. The comedic Love Guru character creates fun and satirical dance records from modern EDM to classic Disco. As Doddi he shows us his more serious side with downtempo electronic tunes about life, love and all they entail.

“Game of Love” is the latest single from Doddi, released November 13, 2020. Lyrically the track tells the tale of a love affair, real or imagined. Doddi sings the lead vocal through the verse. He recounts the confusion of love, of promises made, kept and broken. However, even the singer himself is unsure if any of it ever happened as he sings, “It was only in a dream.” Guest vocalist Aldís’ beautiful and ethereal vocal in the bridge dives even deeper into the hypnagogic state of the song.

Stylistically “Game of Love” has the feel of a mellow 90’s Alternative tune. An ambient synth soundscape floats above a lo-fi acoustic drum loop. The juxtaposition of hard beat and soft instrumentation lands the song somewhere between Duran Duran’s “Ordinary World” and Primitive Love Gods’ “Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand.” And that is a pretty cool place to land.
