Jake Griffus’ Darkly Complex New Candlelight

Jake Griffus is an artist on the Entheogenesis Productions roster as well as one half of the Alternative Hip-hop duo Secondhand Thieves. In addition to the release of his group’s album “Smoke and Mirrors,” the rapper debuted earlier this year with the wildly creative “Stuart Little.” “Candlelight” is Jake Griffus’ follow-up single, released November 20, 2020.

Musically the track rolls on a nice, downtempo Jazz-hop groove. Jake pairs an old school Hip-hop beat with a jazzy piano and bass loop. As the tune progresses, a low sawtooth analog synth bass and bluesy guitar join the mix and set the song’s creepy mood.

“Candlelight” is a dark and psychologically complex song. Lyrically the song explores the fate of a lost soul. The song’s protagonist tells of a friend or lover from the past who is on the brink of suicide. The rapper digs for the deeper demons that brought the friend here. Whether due to mental health issues, substance abuse or both, this person has clearly succumbed to these demons. It is a very real and disturbing story from a talented writer.
