Edwin the N K is the professional name of Canadian musician and producer Edwin Njuguna Kiarie. For years he considered music little more than a hobby. However the COVID-19 crisis has led the artist to reassess the role of his art in his life.
By day, Edwin is a scientist, currently working on his neuroscience masters thesis. However, the forced isolation of the pandemic has severely limited his ability to conduct his research. Undaunted, he used the downtime to focus on his music. In doing so he is combining his two passions. He is currently working on an album of electro-Pop and EDM music inspired by and dedicated to his thesis (spreading depolarizations and the unknown activator that may activate these debilitating brain waves that occur during strokes and are also responsible for the migraine aura). Life handed him lemons and he is turning them into brainy club bangers and scholarly downtempo chillout grooves.
The album will be released in 2021. However, in the interim Edwin the N K has dropped a preview on his SoundCloud page. In three short clips and one full single he has given us a taste of what to expect. Although each of the first three tracks is just two minutes or less in length, they touch on multiple subgenres and flavors of electronic music.
The sampler (below) starts out with “Golden Dreams,” an infectious Electro-Pop dance track that builds into an EDM jam. “Home” follows with a smokey, Jazzy female lead vocal and a cool mix of modern synths and classic 808 percussion. Edwin continues the look back to vintage sounds on “One Love” which rolls on a pulsing synth bass and a general vibe of 80’s inspired synthwave flavor.
“This Smile of Yours” is the one full length single from the collection. It was released to all major streaming services on December 9, 2020. The song is a cool, hypnotic Deep House groove. Over a mellow but driving rhythm Edwin the N. K mixes ethereal synth arpeggios with his own meditative vocals and found sounds. It is a great mood. Check out the sampler, below.
