AZA is a musician, scholar, activist and educator. He is a first-generation American who grew up in Trinidad before studying at some of the most prestigious universities in the US. He attended North Carolina Central University and the Harvard/MIT MD PhD program. He was awarded MIT’s Emerson Scholarship to study Jazz at Boston’s Berklee College of Music.
For AZA, music is a pathway to personal and societal enlightenment. He teaches music and mindfulness as tools that help enhance empathy, social justice, health equity, and wellness. His own company, Renaissance Entertainment LLC operates at the intersection of music, science, and community building to achieve these same goals. As if that weren’t enough, he also conducts research and provides clinical care as a resident in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University.
Over the past two years he has released a number of songs as a solo artist, including last year’s “Bl4ckpack” album. “Taking Off” is his latest single. It is a thoughtful and uplifting track. Lyrically, the song first looks back at past hardships and societal inequities. However, ultimately it delivers a simple and powerful motivational message. Over a mellow piano backing track and an occasional Trap beat, AZA sings of “taking off,” using music as a vehicle for living true to oneself.
It is imperative to inform people that you do not have to conform. You have options. We are free thinkers that are capable of achieving greatness, emotional intelligence, and overall peace in the most trying times.
