Dead Poetrism is the professional name of multi-talented independent musician, Benjamin “Radio” Cook. The Charlotte, North Carolina native is a truly DIY artist. A multi-instrumentalist singer, songwriter and producer, Cook even designs his own cover art. Since debuting in early 2020, the prolific poetrist has released seven singles. All of his songs today count their streaming numbers in the thousands, his most recent is his most successful to date.
“The Lantern” is the latest single from Dead Poetrism, released on September 30, 2020. The track is catchy yet avant-garde bit of Indie Rock. The song’s creative arrangement and slightly esoteric narrative brings to mind some of Modest Mouse’s work. A haunting and rhythmic guitar riff introduces the tune. Benjamin delivers the first verse in an almost rap-like flow as a percussive Alt-Rock groove gradually builds.
As the song progresses, layers of guitars and vocals build to a crescendo until falling back to a mellow strum and vocal harmony break. In short order the mix expands again, this time into a rich and cinematic production. Cook disreagrds the traditional verse/chorus Pop song arrangement. Although his writing style may be unorthodox, the track is repleat with memorable melodies and an infectious rhythm as he sings of the circular nature of love.
