Boring Lauren is an Oakland, California based singer, songwriter and experimental electronic artist, with classical composition and jazz training. Although still just 23 years-old, she has been writing and performing her own original music since grade school. Debuting as Boring Lauren in in 2019 with the single “Open Sky,” the wildly creative artist has since delivered a series of follow-up singles as well as a four song EP.
“Kick Me” is the latest single from Boring Lauren, released on January 8, 2021. The song is a Dark-Pop meditation on an unhealthy relationship. Lauren and her co-producers Dangle.wav and AndrĂ©s Cardona wield a mesmerizing Trip-Hop vibe that combines elements of Alternative, Indie-Pop and EDM. Swirling and overlapping synths create a hypnotic atmosphere. The beat is built on a cool mix of analog and electronic drums. Sixteenth note hi-hats meet bouncing electronic bass tones and a hard EDM kick drum. At the heart of the track are Boring Laruen’s low-key Indie soul vocals. Her almost whispered tones, soulful inflection and darkly introspective lyrics bring to mind giants of the genre like Billie Eilish and St. Vincent.
I was seeing someone who I felt like didn’t like me the way I liked them. I always felt like if someone ‘better’ came around I’d get ‘kicked to the curb’.
