Alpha Circle Digs Deep On The Emotionally Powerful “Cold Again”

Regular readers of The Static Dive are familiar with Alpha Circle. The Madrid band debuted in 2019 with the single “Circles” and then followed-up with the touching love song, “Sweet Talking Time.” With those songs the group established itself as a powerful and emotionally charged Alt-Pop/Rock band in the vein of U2 and Coldplay. The members of Alpha Circle are seasoned professionals who came together with the intent of making uplifting music that fosters compassion and understanding. On their new song, the band shows that sometimes you need to first go into the dark to find the light.

“Cold Again” is the latest single from Alpha Circle, released January 15, 2021. The track is an emotionally complex and dark exploration of the isolation, pain and internal struggle of depression. The song’s simple piano trio arrangement creates an intimate and personal setting. Lead vocalist Lee Chamberlin sings a beautiful and somber tale from the perspective of a soul mired in loneliness and despair and contemplating suicide.

It is a stark subject set to a moving piece of music. The mood remains fittingly somber throughout, although a key change in the last verse, paired with ambient backing vocals add subtle but perceptible intensity to the atmosphere. Chamberlin explains how the song’s subject matter, though decidedly dark, is consistent with the band’s overall positive vibe.

Cold again is all heart. Inspired by a conversation with a friend of mine who once told me after I asked him why he tried to kill himself, “I didn’t want to die. I wanted the pain to stop.” It’s obviously quite deep and dark but we always look for hope in our songs. The hope is in expressing these feelings more people can recognize them and realise they are not alone.
