The Rule – 8 Questions And Awesome Art-Rock Power

The Rule

The Rule are three brothers from Switzerland who may have been transported to 2021 from the FM airwaves of 1976. The power trio plays high concept, hard rocking Progressive Rock. They are Noah, Sven and Finn. Since their 2019 debut the band has released two EPs and now they’re gearing up for a full album.

“Spice Controls the Universe” is the new single from The Rule, released to all major streaming services on January 15, 2021. The track is the first to drop from their forthcoming debut full-length album which promises to tell the tale of, “A drug, a lost civilization and a lonely desert.” The single is the first chapter in a fantastical Sci-fi story of a young man in a new world who realizes he is meant for more.

The brothers create the soundtrack to this epic saga with a Neil Peart-worthy onslaught of drum fills, wailing vocals and hard hitting and intricately complex guitar and bass riff-heavy Rock. Their sound brings to mind some of the best early Rush albums. “Spice Controls the Universe” would fit perfectly between the grooves of the legendary Canadian band’s “Farewell to Kings” album, for instance. In the end though, The Rule’s vibe is their own. They definitely take their cues from Classic 70’s Art Rock, but they define a unique groove on this powerhouse track.

We had the chance to sit down (virtually) with the band to talk about their history, the new song and their plans for the future. Check out the conversation below, as well as the live performance video of “Spice Controls the Universe.” You can also hear the song on the Deep Indie Dive playlist. 8 Questions with The Rule

The Static Dive: Where are you from?

The Rule: We are from Flawil, a tiny town in the middle of nowhere – in between mountains of course – in Switzerland.

SD: How long have you been making music?

TR: We started playing covers 8 or 9 years ago and since 4 years we make our own music

SD: Who are the musicians involved in your project?

TR: We are three brothers, Noah the oldest plays guitar, Sven the middle plays drum and organ and the youngest Finn plays bass and sings. A combination that sometimes works amazing and sometimes we just walk away from each other. 😉

SD: Who are your biggest musical influences?

TR: There are a lot and each one of us has different ones, but we all agree on Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Black Sabbath.

SD: What is your greatest non-musical influence?

TR: That is definitely our Dad. He was just a musical spirit that inspired us to explore and experience the magic of music.

SD: What inspired you to create this project?

TR: It is not really a project we would say, we just love to make music and want to do what our favorite bands are doing. So it evolved all naturally and we are very happy with the outcome!

SD: What are your plans for the future (musically)?

TR: Right now we are writing and recording brand new songs for our debut album which comes out in Summer. And hopefully we can go back on stage soon!

SD: Is there anything else you would like to say?

TR: Stay healthy and hopefully we will see each other soon on stage or at the afterparty to celebrate everything that has been missed for so long.
