Melodic Canvas Digs Deep For Pretentious Intentions

Melodic Canvas is the recording project of singer/songwriter Evan Alderton. Since 2016, the Northern Michigan independent artist has been producing his uniquely visceral brand of Folk infused Alternative Rock. Heavily influenced by the giants of the grunge era, Evan conjures a sound that is emotional and intangible. His esoteric lyrics and haunting music speak directly to the listener’s feelings, bypassing logic. Since the debut 2017 single “Wander in the Woods,” Alderton has produced two EPs and now a new single.

“Pretentious Intentions” is the latest single from Melodic Canvas, released to all major streaming services on September 18, 2020. The track is a dark meditation on the dynamics of interpersonal relationships. Lyrically the singer presents a series of images, rather than a direct narrative. Scenes of lonely contemplation and tortured introspection are manifested in ominous lines like, “Will I ever know where my demons go.” One imagines the artist walking alone in the dark toward an uncertain fate as his thoughts howl, “I don’t wanna die!”

Musically, “Pretentious Intentions” lies somewhere between Nirvana unplugged and modern day Lo-fi Indie Rock. A solo acoustic guitar introduces the track. Recorded with only natural room reverb and unadorned by any studio trickery, it sets the stark and organic scene. As the rest of the guitar, bass and drums ensemble enter the mix a rolling minor-key groove takes form. Evan delivers his tale in a tone that alternates between an introspective Kurt Cobain and tortured Layne Staley. It is a dark and mellow mood with excellent performances throughout, including a nice noisey guitar solo in the bridge.
