Y8-C (pronounced “yate-see”) is an up and coming Hip-hop artist from the town of Stockport in the UK, near Manchester. The twenty three year-old artist made his debut in 2020 with the single “Jungle,” a downtempo chopping freestyle rap track. The song showcased both his lyrical skills and unique flow.
“Connoisseur” is the latest single from Y8-C, released worldwide to all major streaming services on January 22, 2021. The song indicates a shift in sound for the versatile artist. The beat combines Trap-style hi-hats with Dark-Pop melodic elements and a bit of a Caribbean groove. A low rumbling bass holds down the bottom end while a dramatic, minor-key piano riff sets an ominous mood.
Vocally, Y8-C alternates between a reggae-inspired melodic chorus and a hard rap verse. Showing confident technique in both cases, he delivers a sharp and witty monologue mixing classic Hip-hop posturing with a bit of social commentary. He is a skilled rapper and the song’s Dancehall style groove will work equally well in the club or the car.
