Alex Woburn: 7 Questions And A New Single

alex woburn

Alex Woburn is a singer/songwriter from London who lives and breathes Pop music. He has been writing songs for years and was a finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest 2020 (Pop Category). On Valentine’s Day he released his debut single “Clown,” a catchy Pop tale of unrequited love.

The upbeat tune bounces along on a classic Tommy James-style Pop melody. The verse features an interesting musical arrangement with an acoustic guitar and a vibraphone at the helm. The chorus maintains the bubblegum melodic vibe, but the mix opens up with a full Rock ensemble. The cheery music belies a darker lyrical theme as the singer berates himself for obsessing over someone unattainable.

We had the chance to chat (virtually) with Alex Woburn about the past, the future and his new single “Clown.” You can read his answers to our 7 questions and listen to “Clown,” below. You can also hear the track on the Deep Indie Dive playlist. Follow the links at the end of this article to connect with Alex Woburn.

Alex Woburn – “Clown”

7 Questions with Alex Woburn

The Static Dive: Where are you from?

Alex Woburn: I’m from London, UK 🙂

SD: How long have you been making music?

AW: I’ve been making pop music for 16 years now! Its my favourite thing in the whole world; I’m constantly writing – it keeps me sane! There’s a reason my debut album is called Self Therapy…

That is honestly what songwriting is for me. I never actually plan to write a song – they just pour out when I’m emotional (which apparently is all the time hahaha!). When I write songs it comes as a package deal – the melody and lyrics come at the exact same time.

SD: Who are the musicians involved in your project?

AW:  This track was produced by the amazing Rob Wilks at 123 Studios, Peckham.

SD: Who are your biggest musical influences?

AW: I am a total Pop Prince; my biggest influences growing up were artists like Avril Lavigne, Pink, The Veronicas and Lily Allen. A lot of my earlier work had that heavy pop/rock guitar sound – Blink 182 vibes! I’m obsessed with all pop music to be honest – my more recent influences are artists like Bebe Rexha. Bring me good pop all day and all night!

SD: What is your greatest non-musical influence?

AW: My life!! Everything that happens in my life influences my music! Every song I write is like a diary page!

SD: What inspired you to create this project?

AW: I wrote ‘Clown’ on a rainy Sunday morning last year after the horrific realisation that I had completely embarrassed myself – pining after someone who I have no chance of ever being with. I actually felt really sad, and really embarrassed – you know those crazy things you do when you like someone, drunk texts etc etc.

So anyway I had a little cry on my sofa and this song poured out in about 7 minutes… and I was just in love with this song as soon as I wrote it – I was dancing around the house singing it to myself all day and I was magically healed from my heartbreak! And I immediately booked time in the studio to go and record it! Every cloud has a pop song in it!

SD: What are your plans for the future (musically)?

AW: Omg I am just so excited to continue releasing singles. I already have my next three singles planned! I just want to carry on making pop music and try and put it out into the world; hopefully people will like it! and if not it doesn’t matter! I’ll never stop! That feeling I have when I listen to a new song I’ve recorded… its such a rush and a release… its like a drug. So healing and so powerful… I will continue to make pop records because it really is my Self Therapy.
