Stella West is a UK singer/songwriter making her debut in 2021. The 28 year-old has released two singles to date. Although these songs mark the dawn of her professional solo music career, they are really the culmination of a years-long search for a “sound.” She was first inspired to write songs as a child after hearing Dolly Parton on the radio. From there the young artist went on to explore music of all flavors, from the dark gothic Alternative Rock of Nick Cave to modern Country crooners like Colter Wall.
All of these wildly varying influences eventually formed into a cohesive style. With her debut single “Ode to the Devil (Mother Mary),” West introduced a cinematic sound that brings to mind the great Spaghetti Western and Noir films of the past. With sparse acoustic instrumentation, haunting vocals and a vast reverb that echoes across the plains, she tapped into a distinct vibe. This is Quentin Tarrantino film music. This is Clint Eastwood riding off into the sunset as the credits roll.
“Teddy (No Lover of Mine)” is the latest single from Stella West, released worldwide to all major streaming services on March 6, 2021. Distant ambient drums drive a slow march as a cowboy’s jangly fireside guitar sets the scene. At the heart of the song is Stella. In a sultry and sorrowful tone she sings of regret and longing. Her poetic narrative implies a deeper and darker tale of which we are only scratching the surface.
