Heistheartist (HITA) is the professional name of Christian Neo-Soul singer, songwriter and producer Leemann Bassey. The Long Island, NY native worked for a time as a secular artist under his given name. However, he had an epiphany after watching a particularly moving sermon by celebrity megachurch pastor, TD Jakes. It was then that Leemann became HITA and decided to dedicate his life to his faith. He has chosen to spread the word not from the pulpit, but from the recording studio. He now makes his music with the same passion and faith that drives preachers like TD Jakes.
HITA has enjoyed a string of successes since changing the direction of his career. His single, “Boom (Remastered)” hit #1 on the Christian/Gospel charts in South Africa. He followed that win with a #1 iTunes Jazz mash-up of Britney Spears and Adair. Now in 2021 he has already released a series of new singles. Heistheartist kicked off the year with the double single “The Snake Charmer/The Exodus.” He followed shortly thereafter with the lo-fi Trap of “What Did I do?” and a cover of the George Gershwin ‘Porgy and Bess’ classic, “Summertime”
“Virgin” is the latest single from Heistheartist, released worldwide to all major streaming services on March 5, 2021. The song features a smooth R&B vocal performance set to a funky, organic Hip-hop beat. Both electronic and acoustic drums carry a persuasive and melodic bass and synth groove. The infectious rhythm, matched with HITA’s soulful and understated vocals brings to mind some of Prince’s more experimental grooves. Lyrically, the singer delivers a cryptic meditation on love, devotion, sex and abstinence.
“Virgin” delves into the experience of a Catholic Nun taking a vow of abstinence and how difficult that is while living in a society where the temptation of sex is everywhere.
