April and The Drift is a musical duo composed of Copenhagen singer/songwriter April and her co-writing producer Fidel Carmona. The two made their international debut in 2019 with the album “Shorelines.” With that record they introduced a shared experimental musical soul that explores April’s multi-genre leanings and deeply soulful, Jazz-infused vocals. Citing influences as varied as Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Bob Marley and Leonard Cohen, April combines a vast musical palette with spiritual and poetic vision.
“Yesterday’s News” is the band’s latest single, released worldwide to all major streaming services on March 19, 2021. The short, otherworldly tune is a jazzy meditation on transience and memory. Carmona produced the track with a mix of Ragtime-style acoustic instrumentation and trippy psychedelic effects. The song sounds like a transmission through time, like a message received in a dream. April’s whispered tones set us outside the confines of reality for 1:10.
I sometimes wonder if we could make this world into a better place by changing our focus from the mind and body and be more open to the spiritual dimensions around us. While writing this song, I came to the realization that our existence can be made out of some strange mix of physical and spiritual dimensions with each other and with the Earth.
