Miani G is an aspiring singer, songwriter and rapper based in Baltimore, Maryland. She moved around a lot as a child, living at times in Mississippi, Chicago and Maryland. It was in college that she first tapped into her artistic side. Inspired by both Chicago and Louisiana Hip-hop, she put pen to paper and began relaying her real-life struggles through music. In her songs the talented up and coming Hip-hop artist tells autobiographical tales of interpersonal relationships, mental health issues and the emotional cost of both.
“From the Abyss” is the debut EP from Miani G, released worldwide to all major streaming services on March 5, 2021. The four song collection is a layered and emotionally complex examination of human interactions, motivations and the artist’s own mind. Lyrically Miani mixes poetic imagery, clinical psychological analysis and deeply personal conversational observations. She delivers her smart and emotionally raw narratives with equally impressive singing and rhyming skills over melodic piano based Emo Trap beats.
The record opens on the song “These Days,” a critical self assessment set to a downtempo beat and a low droning analog synth bass. By the time she sings, “Tell me what it takes for me to be happy these days,” it is clear this is not your average Trap. “Trust Issues” is a real high point. A beautiful progression of minor-key piano arpeggios, deep bass and a Trap beat set a dramatic scene. Miani G flows smoothly between Dark Pop singing and melodic rap as she covers heavy ground.
“Don’t Understand” brings some nice Synthwave sounds and a bit of a Reggae groove into the mix while Miani drops some really impressive chopping in this track about loneliness and abandonment. The record closes on the dark, dramatic and psychedelic vibes of “Deep Thoughts.” As trippy backing vocals float around her she sings the heartbreaking line, “But look at all I lost. And look at all it cost. And look how hard I fought.” Once again she tackles the heavy subject matter with impressive technique and a keen sense of melody.
