Chef Success Drops Thoughts From The Cell

Chef Success is an aspiring Hip-hop artist with a unique backstory. Recently released from jail and now living in Humboldt County, California, the San Diego native also has ties to San Antonio, Texas. That is where he first started making music in January 2020. Although the rapper only recently made his professional debut, he has quickly made up for lost time. In just over a year he has already dropped two dozen original songs.

“Thoughts From The Cell” is the latest project from Chef Success, released February 21, 2021. As the title suggests, the four song collection is a lyrical set of letters, essays and diatribes as told by the author as he sits alone in a cell. Each track employs cinematic instrumentation to create a dramatic backdrop for the narrative.

The opening track “Dear Kids” is a letter addressed directly to the rapper’s children. It is an emotional and heartfelt piece set to an anthemic mix of strings, synths, piano and guitar over and old-school Hip-hop beat. The title track follows as a similar letter, this time directed to the rapper’s love interest and with many more mixed emotions. This song is also the one time on the record that Chef Success dips into a Trap beat.

Each of the last two tracks on the EP match dramatic music with big Boombap beats. “Bottle and a Sniper Scope” is a dark and violent gangster rap fantasy with an orchestral backing track. “Agony” follows with a cool Jazz-hop piano loop matched to a fat beat. Lyrically the track is a deep and painful exploration of alcoholism as seen from the inside.
