Atomic Berries is an EDM duo from Finland who made their debut in 2019 with the 6-song EP “Far Away.” Unfortunately, soon afterward founding vocalist Marjo-Reetta had to leave the group due to external obligations. Producer Mike Midas had to try and find a new collaborator in the midst of a pandemic. Luckily a vocalist known as Juniper came along and helped Midas turn the bad situation into gold.
The group’s sound mixes multiple genres of electronic dance music into their own distinctive, retro-future groove. Their songs pair uplifting, inspiring and sometimes fantastical lyrics with uptempo beats that explore the many flavors of House music.
“Chasing the Dream” is the brand new album from Atomic Berries, released worldwide to all major streaming services on March 24, 2021. The 8-song collection finds the band delivering a message of optimism and perseverance at a time when we could all use a little more of both. From the suggestive Sci-fi fun of “Robo Lover” to the conjured images of “mystic fairy tales and cosmic magic carpet rides” of “Time to Sleep,” Juniper delivers messages of motivation, imagination and escape. It is a fun and funky party.
Throughout the record, Midas weaves Disco keys and strings around House beats. Classic 80’s synths spin in the periphery creating infectious subrythms and melodic hooks. Subtle shifts in key and timbre change the mood to match the attitude of each song’s theme. For instance, lyrically the record takes a temporary detour into melancholy on “Relive the Moment.” As Juniper explores her longing nostalgia for a past love, Mike maintains the driving beat but shifts the song melodically into a minor key.
“Improvisate” is a creative and inspirational bit of dance music with just a touch of Zen Buddhism. “No Pain No Fame” would sit well right alongside some of Lady Gaga’s best dance music. The last two songs on the record delve into the surreal. On both “No more Words to Say” and “Time to Sleep,” trance inspired beats carry hypnotic melodies and surreal lyrics about imaginary far off lands and deeply introspective thoughts. It’s a great way to close out this high energy EDM/Pop exploration of magic, mystery and the power of positive thinking.
