Matt Reilly’s Cool New Synthwave Movie Music

Under normal circumstances Matt Reilly works regularly as Avril Lavigne’s bass player and is also an in-demand musician in the thriving Los Angeles live music scene. But this past year has been anything but normal. As is the case with live musicians across the world, Matt found himself with a lot of free time over the last twelve months. So, as he waited for venues to once again open their doors, he hit the studio and got to work on his solo instrumental debut album.

To date, the bassist/composer has released two singles from the forthcoming record. First came the retro 90’s Alt-Pop of “Forward is a Better Direction.” That song featured a rhythmic and melodic bass line with ambient synths and some fun and quirky guitar/synth melodies to create a cool Pixies-style groove. His second single takes us further back again for an 80’s inspired synthwave bit of Hollywood movie magic.

“error_thought/unknown” is the latest single from Matt Reilly, released worldwide to all major streaming services and Bandcamp on April 2, 2021. The new track finds the bassist taking the melodic lead in a downtempo synth-pop instrumental that sounds like the love theme from some great 80’s cult classic. Matt plays some really beautiful leads with slow jazz phrasings, full bass chord transitions and a smooth clean tone. Meanwhile a classic drum machine and MIDI synth groove sets an expansive neon landscape.
