Heartless Power is a new experimental electronic artist from Birmingham, Alabama. Their debut eponymous EP was released worldwide to all major streaming services on April 5, 2021. The four song collection introduces us to an act that blends the sound of 80’s DarkWave and Alternative music to create dramatic scenes and Science Fiction themes.
The record opens with the Industrial groove of “Run Wild Life.” Percussive machine music pounds out the rhythm as a low synth plays a dark bass riff. Meanwhile the singer drops thoughts and observations from a life in transition. As a piano joins the mix for a more defined Pop structure in the chorus he sings, “You are not who you were the day before.” The song establishes both the retro-future vibe of the record’s sound and its cinematic storytelling imagery.
“Chaos & Light” dives further into the 80’s inspired Synthwave vibe with a web of overlapping classic analog sounds. The track invokes the ghosts of New Wave giants like New Order and Depeche Mode. Lyrically it deals in some dark post-apocalyptic visions. The songwriter explains that the track was inspired by “Dark,” a German science fiction series that ran on Netflix for three-seasons, “I found that show to be wildly emotional and profound, and it was just begging for someone to write a song about it.”
The wildly creative “Sincere City Ain’t a Real Place” opens with the silicon sounds of electronic arpeggios as the singer recites stark visual poetry. Halfway through the track an acoustic guitar takes the arrangement in a very different direction and the song takes on a real Pink Floyd feel. The EP ends on “Airbrush 05,” a hypnotic Dream Pop meditation that builds into an epic guitar and synth anthem.
