AI is a Synth-Pop duo from the Southwestern musical mecca of Austin, Texas. Since their 2019 debut the band has created a retro sound that blends synths, drum machines, and ethereal vocals into a rick Electro-Pop groove. It is a vibe that harkens back to the days when Punk and Pop morphed together to create New Wave, which ushered in the dawn of Alternative Rock.
“Don’t You (Get Carried Away)” is the latest single from AI, released worldwide to all major streaming services on April 13, 2021. The song mixes the group’s throwback sound with a very modern message. Among their influences they list Depeche Mode, David Byrne, and The Eurythmics. We certainly hear their influence here with the song’s driving beat, dramatic vocal and fantastic retro-synth flare. With a cool mix of guitars and keys the track also brings to mind the early work of The Cure. And that’s never a bad thing.
Although the production is of the 1980’s, the subject matter is very much of today. Lyrically the track explores the painful realities caused by the spread of conspiracy theory and divisiveness caused by the proliferation of misinformation. No subject could be more relevant to the mess of our modern post-Trump world.
When ideas grow, they have the power to bring people together—or cause divisiveness within close-knit groups.
