Vana Liya is a singer, songwriter and renowned ukulele maverick who has made a name for herself in the Reggae and World Music communities since arriving on the international scene in 2018. Prior to her official debut on Los Angeles based LAW Records, Vana enjoyed a series of viral successes for her ukulele covers of popular reggae songs. Now the talented artist has found herself in the recording studio collaborating with some of the same artists she used to cover.
Born Nirvana Goberdhan, the New York native began singing at 12. When she was 19 her mother bought her a guitar. However they soon realized that her hands were too small for the fretboard so Vana made the shift to ukulele. The rest as they say is history. Four years later she was living in LA with a record deal in her pocket.
“Come Away” is the latest single from Vana Liya released worldwide to all major streaming services on February 12, 2021. On the new song Vana is joined by Reggae legend, Half Pint. Produced by Stick Figure guitarist and singer Johnny Cosmic, the song is a chill fusion of Reggae and downtempo chillout music. With a pulsing heartbeat that combines electronic and organic percussion, the hypnotic tune finds the two singers offering guidance and a warning of biblical proportions.
With a message lifted right from the good book Half Pint prophesies, “The sun shall be darkened and the moon shall turn to blood, one of these days.” (Joel 2:31) However, “Come Away” is not a fiery apocalyptic sermon. In soulful and subdued tones the two singers calmly offer advice to us all, “Come away from the land of the sinking sand.” This path of righteousness is illuminated by a hypnotic Caribbean groove, and we are guided by the soothing sounds of Vana Liya. Her almost whispered vocal brings to mind the soulful sounds of the legendary Sade.
