Sara De Sanctis is a singer, songwriter and pianist with a timeless sound. Born and raised in Italy, she began playing piano at just 5 years old. After graduating with a Conservatoire Piano Diploma in Italy in 2017, she studied composition and conducting at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York (USA). She then studied in the UK and earned a degree in Music at the University of Bristol.
In 2019 Sara De Sanctis made her professional solo recording debut with the single “Friday Blues.” With that track she introduced a classic Jazz/Pop style that harkens back to the great crooners of the 40’s and 50’s. It was a time when Jazz and Pop were synonymous, before the explosion of Rock & Roll. It is a tradition kept alive by artists like Jamie Cullum, Tony Desare and the great Diana Krall.
“Serendipity” is the latest single from Sara Desanctis, released worldwide to all major streaming services on May 7, 2021. On the track we find the singer alone with her instrument. With the minimal accompaniment of bass, ambient synths and occasional percussion, Sara’s soft and soulful voice meets the beautifully recorded and expertly executed Jazz phrasing of her piano. She creates an almost dreamlike state in which the singer tries to convince herself that she has purged all memory of her ex. It’s a subtle heartbreak, and one that is universally relatable as she sings, “no, I don’t remember you at all.”
I was taking a class in Sondheim’s musical analyses, and I believe I was strongly influenced by his songs. One, in particular, was ‘The Road You Didn’t Take’, where everything said in the lyrics is a lie. And that’s how I thought about my lyrics.
