The Unwriters’ New Funk For Social Justice

The Unwriters' New Funk For Social Justice 1

The Unwriters are a bit of a mystery, but that is by design. The three-piece band has international origins, with each member hailing from a different country (France, Italy and the USA). The players remain anonymous with the exception of their cryptic monikers; Z (songwriter, bass, guitar, vocals), Twister (keys, piano, vocals, tambourine) and Pat (drums & percussion).

The group formed in 2018 and shortly thereafter released their debut self-titled EP. With that record they introduced a funky, Blues-infused Alternative Rock vibe defined by virtuosic musicianship and a healthy dose of trippy experimentation. It’s a great vibe that lands somewhere between 90’s UK groove bands like Stone Roses and the deep swampy Blues of the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn.

“The Devil’s Run (Freedom and Justice)” is the latest single from The Unwriters, released worldwide to all major streaming services on May 28, 2021. Musically the track is a wild Psychedelic Blues/Funk jam. A killer bassline and a solid drum groove provide the Soul foundation and a constant forward motion. Meanwhile Z and and Twister paint the periphery with Blues-charged Hammond organ and guitar. There is a particularly smoking solo in the bridge.

The song’s video pairs that deeply soulful jam with a powerful film ripped from today’s headlines. As samples of the great Dr. Martin Luther King fade in and out of the mix, we see images of the present day and historical footage of people around the world protesting racial injustice. Scenes of Black Lives Matters activists are juxtaposed against those of Police in riot gear, KKK idiots and violence in the streets. It’s a powerful sign of the times and a moving statement made all the more poignant by the 2+ minute silent scrolling of murdered victims of police brutality. Say their names.
