Free Mace is an emerging Reggae band from Jacksonville, Florida. Fronted by guitarist/vocalist/producer Mason Staub, the group made their debut in 2018 with a self-titled 6 song EP. Since then they’ve dropped a series of singles and two full length albums. In that time the band has connected with fans around the world. Their most recent release is the 4 track EP “World On Fire.” The record is an excellent showcase for the band’s unique mix of Reggae and lo-fi Indie Rock.
“War Machine” is the current single from “World On Fire.” The track is a laid-back antiwar groove. A rolling bass and scratch guitar ride on an easy Caribbean beat as lead vocalist Staub sings a subdued narrative, calling to task those responsible for feeding the war machine. The band mixes a bit of experimentation into their otherwise traditional Reggae vibe with trippy delay on the guitar and some jazzy drum breaks.
The rest of the “World On Fire” record continues the group’s exploration of the many shades of Jamaican music. “2020 Vision” is a particular high point with a funky Ska groove and some wild avant-garde jamming.
