Sky Olson Soulfully Navigates Unsure Waters

Sky Olson is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist bedroom producer who made his professional solo recording debut earlier this year with the release of a series of successful singles. Tracks like “Lighthouse,” and “Dear Katie” connected with fans around the globe. Each was a precursor to the talented artist’s debut album “Unsure Waters,” released worldwide to all major streaming services on July 2, 2021.

Although the Utah-based singer has only recently launched his career, he already has some impressive accomplishments under his belt. In addition to the positive fan reaction to his early singles, Sky Olson has received numerous accolades from the press, both in print and online. He even won the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Contest. On his debut album, the singer applies those skills to seven deeply personal songs that examine his own struggles and those of the world at large.

Stylistically, “Unsure Waters” moves between thoughtful acoustic Alt-Folk and analog/electronic Alt-Pop that brings to mind artists like Ed Sheeran and Charlie Puth. The record opens on an example of the latter, with the percussive, syncopated guitar and synth arpeggios of the song “Oxygen.” In his signature whispered tone, Sky Olson sings for the common man suffering the influence of the powers that be. This longview social commentary is a theme he revisits later on the track “Save the World,” on which he addresses the many ills of our modern world and sums up the failing optimism of millions with the excellent line, “My faith in others is trending down.”

Elsewhere on the album Sky details his own life struggles and inventories the lessons he has learned along the way. On tracks like the melancholy acoustic “Easier Said,” “Wedding Song” and “Dear Katie” he chronicles the phases of a troubled and/or failed relationship. A survivor of a chronic illness, the singer puts to music his related experiences and those of his family on tracks like the thoughtful “Lighthouse” and the deeply moving closing track “Between You And Me.” Although the record shifts subtly through different musical genres and lyrical themes, the sound is anchored by Sky Olson’s soft Pop tenor and his smart and insightful songwriting.
