Troy Bands is the professional name of emerging Hip-hop artist Troy Baudelaire. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the rapper recently relocated across the country to Arizona. After working on his music sporadically for three of four years, he made his professional debut in 2020 with the singles “Wrong Move” and “24 hours.” With those tracks he introduced a hard gangsta rap style, with a sharp wit and a dry sense of humor. Now he’s back for 2021 with his debut EP.
“Return From Trap” is the brand new record from Troy Bands, released worldwide to all major streaming services on July 1, 2021. The six-song collection continues the narrative the rapper started with his inaugural singles. Troy’s music is hard, with real-life stories from the street. He and his crew rhyme about making money, women, making money, drugs and making money. This is unapologetically capitalist, and they’re doing whatever it takes to make that dollar.
What sets Troy Bands apart is his expert wordplay and skilled flow. He is a smart and funny rapper, cleverly spinning his words to make us laugh even when the subject matter is dark and violent. On tracks like the opener “Precaution” he flexes his technique with a rapid-fire chopping rap over a low and slow beat featuring cool EDM bass and a little Latin percussion. Throughout the record he pairs his impressive rhymes with creative production.
From the wild abstract beat of “Too Easy” to the dramatic classical piano Trap grooves of songs like “Back to Back” and the ensemble Drill rap “Demons” (feat. Tray Cinco and Block), Troy takes creative chances and they pay off. However, the star of the show is the rapper’s own sarcastic wit. Along those lines, “started” is a real high point. The song is 2:56 of Troy being smart and really funny over a hard 808 beat. He has the confidence to give the song’s jokes time to breathe. For example, when he takes a break in the first verse to smoke a blunt. It works.
