Soul Chalice is a funky four piece band from Delaware with a taste for the old-school and a wonderfully undefinable musical identity. The demographically and stylistically diverse crew makes music that is equally eclectic. Their sound is a fusion of old-school freestyle Hip-hop, Jazz, classic 70’s Funk and Rock influences ranging from Classic Rock to Grunge. Last month the band made their professional recording debut.
“Enter the Game” is the brand new album from Soul Chalice, released worldwide to all major streaming services on June 25, 2021. The 9 song collection introduces a band with expert chops and an adventurous artistic spirit. From the wild Jazz improvisation of the self-aware opening track “Look Inside” to the closer “Dr. Mic,” a Pop/Rock ode to the healing power of music, the band traverses all avenues of modern popular music.
Tracks like “Ahuww Ahuww” and “Enter the Game” dig deep into classic P-Funk style jams and old-school Hip-hop, mixing analog synths, record scratching and deep bass/drum/guitar grooves. They lay down some soulful R&B vibes on the summertime escape fantasy “Sunflower Seeds,” while “In My Zone” features some great 70’s Jazz/Pop horns and a feel-good groove.
The band shines throughout the record, and they really cut loose on the jazzier tunes like the excellent Acid Jazz/Minneapolis Funk of “New Day” and the Jeff Beck-style Jazz/Rock of “Can’t Keep Holding us Back.” Frontman rapper/singer/DJ Face Balian is the glue that holds it all together through the band’s many genre experiments and improv jams. With a flow and technique that recalls the golden age of Hip-hop, he delivers smart, soulful and uplifting rhymes and melodies. This is the sound of four guys at the top of their game and having a great time. It’s a lot of fun to listen to.
