Max Volante is the professional name of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist producer Maximus DiPierro. Since 2018 the multifaceted young artist from New Jersey has released a series of wildly experimental genre-bening singles that explore every avenue of his diverse talents. An accomplished guitarist, pianist and drummer Max creates organic and electronic hybrid tunes that simultaneously incorporate multiple styles of popular music.
“Volante” is the brand new debut EP from Max Volante, released worldwide to all major streaming services on July 17, 2021. The five song collection dives deeply into a sonic world of psychedelic Soul and complex emotional drama. The record opens on the dark and meditative torch song “50%.” We’re immediately struck by Max’s creative mix of vintage synths, analog instrumentation and creative vocal harmonies. It’s a sound that continues throughout the record but is soon married to a deep groove.
“1?” rides on a cool percussive Trip-hop vibe. Over a driving acoustic drum rhythm Max Volante adds smooth Jazz guitar riffs and a funky rhythmic vocal about trying to break out of the friendzone. “Don’t You Know Better” keeps the beat alive and introduces a touch of old-school Hip-hop and a healthy dose of Prince-style vocal harmonies and tripped-out solo guitar. Here and elsewhere on the record, Max’s sound simultaneously brings to mind the experimental rhythmic world of David Byrne and the Acid Funk freedom of George Clinton.
“You’ve Got Me Wrong” matches that feel with a nice R&B hook and a cool rap break from G-Mitt. The track rolls out on one of the record’s many cool spaced out synth interludes. The EP closes on its most experimental track of all. Max Volante is all in on the psychedelia, complete with a Pink Floyd guitar sample on the track “The Other Half.” The track then slides into a slow, low and hypnotic meditation on the confusion of love. Guest rapper Evanswithlove contributes and appropriately esoteric rhyme before Max slides in with a mix of wild vocal harmonies and soulful lead vocal.
