Knowfake is the professional name of multidisciplinary creator Jay Church. Based in Olympia, Washington the talented 23 year-old musician is making his professional solo recording debut in 2021 with a brand new four track EP. With an avant-garde style the multifaceted rapper, singer, songwriter and producer delivers a smart and complex inaugural record.
“NOFAKESHITSZN” is the debut EP from knowfake, released worldwide to all major streaming services on July 20, 2021. The four song collection introduces an adventurous and creative artist and producer with a knack for experimental beats and clever, often insightful lyrics. With a refreshing lack of restraint he weaves together elements of Hip-hop, Rock and Experimental Electronic music to create a completely unique new vibe.
The record opens with the Glitch beat and short hard rap of “GETBREAD.” In under a minute the song introduces us to the knowfake aesthetic of mixing an old-school Hip-hop flow with new-school rhymes and creative production techniques. The psychedelic vibes of “NOREASON” follow. On the song, knowfake pairs a beat of found sounds and reverse reverb with a crafty lyrical style. Throughout the record the rapper shifts freely between the profound and absurd, twisting standard Hip-hop tropes into a completely new view. Pop culture references lend themselves to fun and unexpected lines, as when he rhymes ‘Hulk Hogan’ with ‘Ford Focus.’
“BAGSNATCHER” takes a downtempo groove into some cool Trip-Hop territory. The beat brings to mind some of Tricky‘s best work. Meanwhile Jay stirs a bit of philosophy in his narrative, shifting between Hip-hop posturing and a theoretical contemplation on the meaning of happiness. The record ends on the Indie Rock and Alt/Hip-hop stew of “B4IMETU,” a touching love song set to a wild musical experiment. Over an abstract beat and noise guitar, knowfake delivers some really romantic poetry, as in the refrain, “I feel like I’ve missed you since before I met you.”
