Grand Cherish is a solo project from an otherwise anonymous and somewhat enigmatic Californian artist. Over the past two or three years he has released a series of originals and covers, across multiple and varied platforms. He cites a mix of classic 80’s and 90’s genres as influences as well modern-day sounds.
Grand Cherish’s varied influences are apparent in his song choices, performance and production styles. His 2019 cover of The Cure’s 1980 classic “Boys Don’t Cry” is an excellent example. The track manages to remain faithful to the original yet still have a predominantly modern Lo-Fi Indie-Rock sound. On his latest release he further explores and blurs the lines between modern and classic Alternative Rock.
“Sentiments” is the brand new single from Grand Cherish, released July 21, 2021. Opening on a bit of dissonant Punk Rock noise, the song soon drops to a melodic Indie-Pop guitar riff. The singer joins the ensemble with a narrative of esoteric lyrics about relationship confusion. The production is a wild mix of Indie-Rock, experimental electronic and Psychedelic Classic Rock. A retro organ floats on the horizon as Television-inspired guitar harmonies share space with a laid-back lead vocal. The song’s mood shifts back and forth from defeatist to hopeful, all the while chilling out on a cool retro Pop groove.
Check out the song’s equally creative video below. The excellent visual features family photos and home movies filtered through a psychedelic lens.
